Overview: Math Tutors
A report card came home, or a test went badly, and the word tutor entered the conversation. Before you hire anyone, work out which problem you are solving. A student who cannot do this week's homework because the ground underneath it was never solid needs something very different from a student who understands the material and then freezes in a test.
What you can hire splits roughly three ways. Franchised learning centers run a structured worksheet program with staff supervising several students at once. Independent tutors work one to one, at your kitchen table or over video, and build around what this particular student cannot do. Test preparation is its own industry aimed at the SAT, the ACT and AP courses, and teaching someone to handle a timed test is not the same skill as teaching algebra.
A useful first session is mostly diagnosis. Expect a tutor to hunt for the gap rather than start at the top of the current chapter, and expect them to tell you honestly how far back it goes. Ask how they report to you, how they treat homework the school has set, and what they do when a student stops trying.

Check school-provided support first. A classmate at the same level may be a suitable tutoring partner; agree on a review point before buying a long package.
Frequently asked questions
A tutoring center or an individual tutor?
A center gives you a fixed program, set hours and cover if a staff member is sick, with less attention on any one student. An individual tutor gives you the whole hour and can chase a specific weakness, but depends entirely on that one person and their calendar. Younger students who need routine often do better at a center. Older students with one broken topic usually need a person.
How will I know whether it is helping?
Not from the next test alone, because a single result swings on luck and nerves. Better signals are whether your child can now explain a method out loud, whether homework takes less arguing, and whether the tutor's account of the gap matches what the teacher says. Ask for a short written note after each session. A tutor who cannot tell you what was covered is not tracking anything.
Does tutoring over video actually work?
For most students, yes, and it widened the field of tutors you can reach. What it needs is a shared whiteboard rather than a camera pointed at a page, a quiet room, and a device that is not also running games. Younger children lose focus faster on screen. If a student is very reluctant, in person is usually worth the extra cost for the first stretch.
What should happen in the first session?
Questions, mostly. A tutor should look at recent work, ask the student to talk through a problem they got wrong, and find where the reasoning actually breaks. Word problems and fractions are where a lot of later trouble starts, so do not be surprised if a calculus student ends up back there. You should come out of it with a plan you can describe in a sentence.
Is exam prep different from regular tutoring?
Yes, and mixing them up wastes money. Exam prep teaches timing, question formats, when to skip and when to guess, and the specific style of the SAT or ACT. Subject tutoring fixes the mathematics underneath. A student who knows the material but panics needs the first. A student who cannot do the questions needs the second, and no amount of practice tests will substitute.
What do I ask before a tutor comes to the house?
Who is coming, what checks they have been through, and whether an adult will be home. Ask the same about video lessons, since a one-to-one call with a minor deserves the same care as a visit.
